Disney and Manga Update
Yesterday, I was able to see
The Princess and the Frog with Josh and a couple of friends. I am so excited for the return of traditional animation! While the film is probably not quite as good as some of the Renaissance pictures, it's still very enjoyable and one of Disney's best films in recent years. I especially enjoyed the art nouveau dream sequence Tiana has in her restaurant, as well as the numerous references to other Disney films (including an appearance by the directors in the Mardi Gras parade!). What I also found interesting was the film's emphasis on marriage, which was something usually briefly mentioned at the end of other Disney fairy tales. Here, there are numerous shots focusing on the wedding rings Tiana's parents wear, as well as those of the leads later in the film. And, without giving too much away, marriage is integral to the resolution of the film's central problem, as well.
When I came home, I happened upon an interesting little blurb regarding Disney's upcoming films: They now plan to release a traditionally animated film every two years! This likely means that
King of the Elves, which not much is known about, will be CG. According to one of Disney's producers, there will be a new
Winnie-the-Pooh film in 2011 based on five of Milne's stories that have yet to be adapted, and in 2013, we should be getting
The Snow Queen! I am so incredibly excited to see this adapted for Western markets!
I am also eagerly awaiting Studio Ghibli's next film announcement, which is on Wednesday, I believe. I'm also hoping for some concept art from Takahata's
Bamboo Cutter soon.
As for manga, I will have the seventh volume of
Candy Candy uploaded this weekend. I will then be taking a week long break for Christmas before continuing with volumes eight and nine. I also was able to secure raws for
Rose of Versailles, so that will likely be my next project. It's the aizoban edition, so my releases might be a bit different. The entire ten volume series is collected in two large special edition books here and I haven't looked to see if they're still separated by volume within the books, or if they're just chapters. So we'll have to see.
Sorry if this post was excessively dorky. I just felt the need to post about this stuff.
